Pundit claims Liverpool should sign Sergio Aguero this summer

Former Sunderland forward Stephen Elliott believes that Liverpool should be pursuing Sergio Aguero this summer with the Manchester City attacker set to leave the club for free at the end of this season.

Speaking on Off The Ball following City’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, the ex-Premier League striker claimed that Liverpool should be all over Aguero heading into the summer window, and that a player of his quality and experience is exactly what the Reds need after a disappointing season.

Liverpool failed to retain their Premier League title, with Jurgen Klopp’s side currently outside the top-four with five games left to play, as well as out of the UEFA Champions League after crashing out to Real Madrid in the quarter-final stage of the competition, and for Elliott, Aguero could be the play to get the Reds back to the top of the English game.

The former Republic of Ireland international said on where Aguero could end up this summer: “If I am the Liverpool manager, I am signing him (Aguero) 100%. I watched him today and he still looks hungry in and around the goal.”

Elliott later added: “I think Aguero could be a massive signing. Whether he would come and sign for a rival of City, I am not sure. It would be a gigantic signing for Liverpool. I think he would lift the place.”

TBR View: Liverpool should aim younger than Aguero despite his goalscoring record

With Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane having their worst goalscoring seasons for Liverpool since joining the club, a change in attack could be on the cards for Klopp’s side next season, with a fresh approach likely to be the main focus in the summer transfer window.

However, a move for Aguero would be a step away from Liverpool’s transfer policy that has been key to their success in recent years. Although the Argentine international has been phenomenal for City since arriving in 2011, the 32-year-old striker just doesn’t fit the criteria of player that the Merseyside club will look at when it comes to summer signings.

It is likely that the Reds will go for someone who is not only significantly younger, but also less injury-prone, with Aguero’s last few Premier League seasons being riddled with injuries that have kept him out of the City XI for months at a time.
