Pundit claims he’s heard Arsenal transfer rumour which has no chance of happening

With deadline day well underway, Arsenal are still scouring the transfer market for potential reinforcements.

With Aaron Ramsdale close to joining Southampton, they are on the lookout for a goalkeeper to deputise for David Raya.

Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign Beto from Bournemouth, while Joan Garcia has also been linked with a move to the Emirates.

The Gunners are also looking to add another attacker to their squad to compete with their existing options. In a rather surprising development, Raheem Sterling is wanted by Arsenal after being frozen out of the Chelsea squad.

And Steve Nicol can’t quite wrap his around why the Gunners are interested in snapping him up.

The Liverpool icon believes Arsenal already have enough options on the left flank with Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli while he also mentioned Sterling’s exorbitant wage packet as a potential stumbling block.

“There’s no possible way Arsenal want Raheem Sterling, come on!” Nicol said on ESPN UK’s YouTube channel.

“They have got Martinelli, Trossard on that left-hand side, fighting tooth and nail for every single starting position. Why would they come and throw Raheem Sterling in the mix?

Nicol feels the move doesn’t make sense for Arsenal, suggesting that Sterling is likely to remain at Chelsea beyond the transfer window due to the lack of potential suitors.

He added: “It makes no sense whatsoever, and then you add £325 grand a week. No. He is going to be sitting on his backside when the window closes. Guaranteed.”

What do we know about Arsenal and Sterling?

Sterling has two options on the table on deadline day and neither of them are straightforward choices – move to Arsenal or remain at Chelsea.

Maresca has mentioned several times this month that the England international will play as long as he’s at the club, while a move to Arsenal looks like it could be difficult to materialise owing to multiple factors like his profile and wages.

Sterling’s career is at a bit of a crossroads, having also lost his place in the England squad.

With just under 11 hours to go for the transfer window to slam shut, it remains to be seen if he secures a move to Arsenal or another club.
