Robbie Mustoe has suggested that Unai Emery would be perfect for Manchester United as he backed the Aston Villa boss as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag.
Mustoe was speaking on The 2 Robbies podcast after United suffered their third 3-0 loss at home this season at the weekend, with Bournemouth the latest to silence the Theatre of Dreams.
Erik ten Hag is not solely responsible for Manchester United’s problems right now. The club appear to be further away from being in title contention than they were a decade ago. And they are being left behind by a number of rivals.
Robbie Mustoe suggests Unai Emery would be perfect for Manchester United
One of those sides who have now leapt ahead of United are Aston Villa. The Villans are now within touching distance of the Premier League summit after beating Arsenal at the weekend.

It is remarkable to see how far Unai Emery has taken Villa. He took over just over a year ago when the Villans were on the periphery of the relegation battle.
They have been phenomenal throughout 2023. And with that, Robbie Mustoe suggested that the Villa boss should surely be on Manchester United’s radar if they decide to move ten Hag on at any point.
“I should not mention this, but I can’t help think it, the game we just reviewed and thinking about people who might come in for Erik ten Hag… Unai Emery,” he told The 2 Robbies.
“And I’m only chucking it out there as a bit of fun, right. Villa fans, don’t get too crazy about it. But just listen to this, in terms of his experience, his ability to win competitions, domestically and internationally, he’s been around the Premier League a bit now, he’s been at a big club in the Premier League in Arsenal, didn’t work very well. He’s showing himself now what a superb coach he is. I think his attention to detail, his work ethic is perfect for Manchester United.”
Spaniard has little reason to want to leave Aston Villa anytime soon
Aston Villa fans will wonder why Emery would be interested in going anywhere, let alone to Manchester United right now. Ultimately, only one of the two sides are on the way up at the moment.
Villa also have the means to improve further. So this season could be a sign of what is to come for the Villans.
Of course, Manchester United remain one of the biggest clubs in the world. And they will be back on top at some stage in the future.
However, several managers have come and gone from Old Trafford without achieving a great deal. And given what happened to Emery at Arsenal, he will surely be wary of throwing away a good thing.
Given some of the transfers which have taken place across football over the last few years, all bets would probably be off if Manchester United did sack ten Hag and targeted Emery.
But if they did, on current evidence, you would have to wonder why he would want to take such a gamble.
