Pundit baffled after hearing who Liverpool could sign

Liverpool are yet to make any moves in this summer transfer window.

The Reds haven’t made their first signing of the Arne Slot era yet, but they do have some targets in mind.

Fabrizio Romano stated a while ago that Liverpool are working on signing a centre-back, while links to Anthony Gordon just won’t go away.

Gordon to Liverpool could be on the cards this summer, but according to Steve Nicol, speaking on ESPN, this is a move that doesn’t make any sense.

Steve Nicol sceptical about Anthony Gordon move

Nicol spoke about the winger and his links to Liverpool.

“It doesn’t make any sense. Unless Mo Salah is going. Because I hope he is not playing Mo Salah through the middle. Mo Salah is not at his best through the middle, and so, to sign Anthony Gordon to me would mean that Mo Salah is gone,” Nicol said.

“Otherwise, why are you signing him? You have already got cover for Diaz with Gakpo, you have got Jota and Nunez trying to get that centre-forward spot and you have got Mo on the right-hand side.

“I mean, you have got healthy competition, you have got five really strong, good, sometimes brilliant players for three positions.

“I mean, where’s Anthony Gordon going to play? I think he’s a great player, I like him, but why are you spending £50 million on somebody unless you need them? And right now, if nobody goes, they don’t need him.”

Liverpool don’t need Anthony Gordon

As good a player as Gordon is, Nicol does have a solid point here.

The Reds have so many players who can play down that left wing already.

Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota are all capable of playing down the left, and signing Gordon at this point would be overkill.

Of course, there is the idea that Gordon could play down the right and rotate with Mohamed Salah, but that isn’t his best position, and there may be better options out there in that role.

This is a signing that makes little sense, it has to be said.
