PSG signing De Gea would likely boost Newcastle’s chances of landing Trapp

Paris Saint-Germain are ready to bid for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, according to a report by the Times.

They report that in the wake of Gianluigi Buffon leaving the club after just one season, the French champions have intensified their interest in de Gea.

De Gea’s contract situation at Old Trafford remains precarious, with just one more year left to run on the deal Spotrac claim is worth £200,000 a week.

One man who may have hoped to fill the void left by Buffon’s departure is German international stopper Kevin Trapp, who spent the season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt.

But PSG making such a clear statement of intent by buying de Gea would send a message to Trapp that his services are no longer needed – and that would be a boost for Newcastle United.

Earlier this week, the Daily Express reported that the Magpies were keen on landing Trapp if their proposed takeover goes through.

Martin Dubravka made some mistakes last season but remains a strong operator at Premier League level, but if Rafa Benitez wants an upgrade in the shape of Trapp, de Gea’s arrival would free the German up for a move.

Magpies fans will only believe they’re signing a player from a mega-rich Champions League side when he’s holding the black and white shirt, but de Gea’s move would almost certainly boost the chances of it happening.
