Leeds United got back to winning ways in the Championship with a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday. A Patrick Bamford brace was enough to bring the three points back to Elland Road. The striker also made a statement with his goals, as his place in the team is currently under threat from Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah. The burgeoning competition between those two attackers is a promising development in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.
Sky Sports pundit David Prutton certainly believes the win over the Latics was a vital one. In his EFL predictions column, he said, “it was important for Leeds to get that win on Saturday. You feel that any memories of last season are well and truly banished now and everyone at the club can look forward”.
The Whites will be looking to claim victory again when they host Brentford on Wednesday. Prutton has predicted “Leeds to win” by a 2-1 scoreline.
It certainly was important for Leeds to beat Wigan, though not necessarily to banish the ghosts of last season. Bielsa will have already ensured that his squad have put the events of the previous campaign out of their minds. It was important for Leeds to beat Wigan simply because they should. If the Whites are to secure automatic promotion this time around then they cannot afford to slip up against weaker opponents.
The same goes for the Whites’ clash with Brentford. The Bees have struggled for goals so far this season and Leeds have the home advantage. The fans and Bielsa will both expect a win on Wednesday.
