Glasgow Rangers were believed to be interested in Kilmarnock youngster Liam Smith but any hopes of him coming to Ibrox have been dashed.

According to a recent report in The Scottish Sun, Rangers were in the race for the 16-year-old academy defender, along with English sides Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, the Daily Record reported that Smith had been training with Man City since late last year as the two clubs looked to work out a compensation fee.

Kilmarnock have now confirmed on their official website that the teenager has joined the Etihad Stadium side with immediate effect.

The Ayrshire club also hinted that they will be entitled to bonuses based on future performance.

“Kilmarnock Football Club can confirm we have reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of Liam Smith,” said a statement.

“The 16-year-old Killie Academy product will join the English Premier League club with immediate effect.

“The deal, the terms of which remain undisclosed, takes account of Liam’s prodigious talent and future potential.”

Smith had helped Killie to reach the final of this season’s Scottish FA Youth Cup and has already been capped for the Scotland Under-17 team.

Although Smith had not made his debut for Kilmarnock’s first team, the amount of reported interest in him from Rangers and two leading English clubs is testament to his talent.

However, the Ibrox side has sadly missed out as he heads south of the border to link up with the reigning English Premier League champions.

It remains to be seen whether Smith has made the right call, given the amount of competition for places at Man City which has seen the likes of Jadon Sancho seek first-team football elsewhere.
