'Probably the best': Stuart Pearce says Newcastle have a 'magnificent' talent in their ranks

Newcastle United full-back Kieran Trippier is in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup.

It is a just reward for a player who has been nothing short of sensational for the Magpies since joining in January.

Indeed, Trippier signed off for the first half of the Premier League season with a masterclass against Chelsea.

The 32-year-old had fellow Three Lions ace Mason Mount in his back pocket en route to a 1-0 win.

England legend Stuart Pearce has told talkSPORT about just how much the Newcastle star impressed him in that game.

The former defender messaged Gareth Southgate on his way home from St James’ Park to tell him how good Trippier was.

“I have to mention Trippier,” Pearce said on talkSPORT.

“I was at Newcastle vs Chelsea. It was probably the best I’ve ever seen him play.

“I’ve never done this before. I got in my car on the way home, stopped for a coffee, and felt obliged to text Gareth [Southgate] about how well Trippier played.

“We’re on the verge of a World Cup. We’re a week away. I have no vested interest in getting Trippier in the team.

“He was that good and the performance was that good. There are Kyle Walker injury doubts in that position.

“I thought if Gareth wasn’t at the game, I could be another set of eyes just to say, ‘Wow’.

“I was so impressed with him. His defensive work was brilliant.

“His covering positions were brilliant. Going forward, he was magnificent.

“His all-round game was exceptional in a brilliant team performance.”

Glory for club and country this season?

Trippier joined Newcastle back when they were struggling last season, and helped them stay up comfortably.

This season, the Magpies have kicked on nicely, and the veteran continues to stand out for Howe’s side.

After years of disappointment, it’s great that Newcastle fans can support a team challenging for glory.

And over the next month, Trippier will also try to do his best to help England to glory too.
