Everton completed the permanent transfer of Andre Gomes earlier this week. The Portuguese midfielder joined the club from Barcelona in a deal reported by the BBC to be worth £22 million.
The Toffees have been pursuing this deal for most of the summer. Gomes spent last term on loan at Goodison Park and impressed fans with his performances n Merseyside.
But to the outsider, it is easy to wonder why. Gomes’ 2018-19 stats are not sensational. But anybody who saw him play on a good day at Everton will understand the transfer fee.

If looking for a good example of this, then a report from MARCA in February might be the best indicator.
The Spanish paper was reporting that Barcelona were so impressed by Gomes’ performances that they felt a €40 million (£35.8 million) sale might be on the cards.
Gomes went on to struggle for consistency toward the end of the season. His complete lack of pre-season action could explain that. But it was no surprise he was being linked with the likes of Tottenham and West Ham as well in the summer. That is how impressive his performances are when viewed.
Everton, like with Lucas Digne last summer, have got their hands on a bargain from Barcelona.
