Everton appear to be in the market for another left-back.
The retirement of Leighton Baines, and the departure of Djibril Sidibe back to parent club AS Monaco has left the Toffees needing cover for the left side of their defence.
In the last week the club have been linked with a move for Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon, with Sky Sports claiming an £18 million bid was lodged.
More recently, Chelsea and Napoli have joined the hunt for the Spaniard, which may be seen as a blow by Everton officials.
Reguilon certainly appears to have a number of attractive propositions, and it could be that Everton lose out.
If Reguilon isn’t to be for the Toffees though, a very cost-effective alternative is available.
AC Milan’s Ricardo Rodriguez is said to be on the market for under €5 million/£4.5 million (Calciomercato), which could be massively appealing for a player with 71 international caps for Switzerland.
TBR’s View – Everton’s ideal alternative
Reguilon may slip beyond their grasp, and if that happens Rodriguez should be the alternative for Everton.
The Toffees have actually been linked before, with Blick reporting interest from the Merseyside outfit in October 2019.
Rodriguez needs a fresh start having lost his way with the Rossoneri and Goodison Park could be a nice environment.
He would be great back-up for Digne and is even capable of playing as a winger, with his crossing ability particularly strong.
What’s more, the star is something of a set-piece specialist and takes penalties, making him a potentially ideal Baines replacement.
