It is being reported that Newcastle United were in the running for Morocco international full-back Hamza Mendyl this summer. The player himself has confirmed such links. Speaking to German magazine Kicker, the 20-year-old confirmed talks with Newcastle this summer. However, the player claimed he was unlikely to receive a work permit which put an end to any potential deal.

Newcastle were said to be keen on bringing in a new left-back this summer to provide cover in the position. However, they were unsuccessful in several moves for different options.

Mendyl would have been an absolute steal for Newcastle. At just 20-years-old, he looks set for a fine career in the game.

“True, I’ve been in talks with Arsenal FC and Newcastle United.

“But being a Moroccan citizen it’s not so easy to get a work permit there, I would have thought I’d play in England.”

However, with a move to England out of the question, Mendyl headed elsewhere. Schalke 04 snapped up the Moroccan this summer. They reportedly paid a fee in the region of €7 million (£6.3 million) to sign the player.

Schalke were desperate for a new left-back this season. Of course, they were even linked with Tottenham Hotspur’s England international Danny Rose. But even on a season-long loan, the £50 million-rated star was too rich for Schalke’s taste, according to Sky Sports.

However, the fact they then went for Mendyl highlights how highly rated the Moroccan talent really is.

Newcastle will no doubt be disappointed to have missed out on such a precocious talent.
