Ray Parlour believes Arsenal have made a truly 'excellent' signing

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes the Gunners have proven doubters wrong over the signing of Aaron Ramsdale.

The 23-year-old joined Arsenal in the summer transfer window for a fee that could reportedly rise to £30million.

There was criticism of the signing from some quarters, who questioned paying such a high fee for a player who initially appeared to be joining as a back-up.

This came just under a year after Arsenal sold Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa, the Argentine going on to become a star for club and country.

However, it only took a couple of weeks for Ramsdale to displace Bernd Leno in between the Arsenal sticks.

And given how well the former Sheffield United man has been doing for the Gunners, it’s safe to say he’s cemented his place as first-choice.

“Jens Lehmann was like that”

Parlour sung Ramsdale’s praises on talkSPORT (via Metro), and even compared him to Invincible goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

“Ramsdale has been excellent since he got his opportunity,” Parlour said.

“They lost Martinez to Villa who had a really good end to the season and they got good money for him.

“But then you’re thinking, “Hang on a minute, we’ve just spent £30m on Ramsdale… is that money well spent?

“But it looks like it’s been a pretty good deal for Arsenal in recent weeks because he’s played very well.

“What I liked about him as well is that when they conceded against Villa, he ran out of his box and was having a go at people and that’s what you want from your goalkeeper.

“Jens Lehmann was like that when I played. That’s what you’ve got to do.

“The people in front of you, you’ve got to try and keep them concentrated and focused on every situation and that’s what I liked about Ramsdale.

“When they conceded the game was probably over, but he wanted that clean sheet so badly and that’s only going to be good for Arsenal if he can continue with the form he’s in.”
