Presenter says Carlton Cole was screaming at Callum Wilson after assist

Carlton Cole has told talkSPORT that he loved Callum Wilson setting up Jack Grealish for England’s sixth goal against Iran on Monday – though presenter Andy Goldstein pointed out that he was initially furious that the Newcastle United star did not shoot instead.

The Three Lions are off to an amazing start to their World Cup campaign. England thrashed Iran 6-2 to already put one foot in the knockout stages of the competition.

There were superb performances all over the pitch. And crucially, Southgate was able to use virtually all of his attacking players in the victory.

Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling all started. And Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford and Wilson came on during the second-half.

The final England goal came when Wilson was played in brilliantly. The Newcastle star burst into the box and appeared to have an amazing opportunity to score.

However, rather than take the shot on himself, the 30-year-old slid the ball across the box for Grealish to score a simple tap-in.

Having had time to digest what Wilson did, Cole suggested that it was a superb choice. However, it turns out that he was initially very unhappy with the striker’s decision.

“I love what Callum Wilson did,” he told talkSPORT.

Goldstein replied: “That’s not what you said in there. You turned to Benty and screamed: ‘what was he thinking of?'”

“What I would have done in that situation, because I hadn’t started the game, as a striker, you’re at a World Cup, you want to get on the scoresheet. Put the ball in the back of the net. But this shows what Gareth Southgate is building. He’s building a team,” Cole explained.

Wilson looked set to struggle for minutes at this tournament. Harry Kane is the first name on the team sheet. And it was hard to imagine Southgate wanting to rest him at any stage.

But he was presented an opportunity with England cruising on Monday. And in many ways, Southgate will probably appreciate the assist more than if he had scored.

Southgate will be aware just how desperate Wilson would have been to open his account. And it would not have cost England had the Newcastle man taken on the chance and missed.

So it says an awful lot that he was prepared to pass up the chance to ensure that England did get a sixth.
