Morgan Schneiderlin: Morgan Schneiderlin kept things simple in the middle of the park which was exactly as required against high-flying Arsenal. Ander Herrera and Juan Mata; safe in the knowledge that the Frenchman was holding the fort behind them, felt more comfortable advancing up the pitch and causing damage to Arsenal. Schneiderlin put in six tackles, three interceptions, and cleared the ball four times in his deep role within the midfield. The Gunners themselves had several technically gifted players; such as Mesut Özil and Aaron Ramsey, operating in the vicinity of Morgan Schneiderlin, but the summer signing from Southampton was not to be deterred. Although not headline-grabbing, Schneiderlin’s display at the base of their midfield was integral to securing the victory on the day and he could well have a major role to play for the remainder of the season.

Mark Noble: West Ham United’s midfield general continued a recent run of fine form to win the battle in the centre of the park and guide his side to victory. Mark Noble was always available to pick up the ball off his team-mates, alleviating any pressure on them and allowing his side to drive forward – a trait that Roy Hodgson should not ignore with Euro 2016 in mind. Noble has scored a couple of cracking efforts in the not too distant past and was close to another against Sunderland too. His perfectly struck effort dipped and swirled towards the top corner, only for Vito Mannone to apply the finest of touches that deflected the ball onto the bar.

Ander Herrera: In recent times, Ander Herrera has started to come into his own as a key component of Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United midfield. His composure and ability to turn defence into attack at a moment’s notice has helped to spark a turn-around in fortunes for the Old Trafford outfit. Herrera made five tackles as he added a destructive element to his game and also grabbed what turned out to be the winner. He produced an excellent finish from outside the area to follow up from his superbly dispatched penalty on Thursday night, cementing his claim for a permanent starting berth for the foreseeable future.
