Goalkeeper: Artur Boruc (Bournemouth)
The Poland international has certainly redeemed himself after his error in the match at West Brom last week. His superb reaction save to deny Wayne Rooney was excellent, but the highlight of his game would come near the end, when he thwarted the in-form Zlatan Ibrahimovic superbly from the penalty-spot, anticipating where the mercurial Swede would plant the ball and tipping it around his post with a superb dive low to his right, a lift that the Cherries needed given the circumstances they found themselves in with Surman’s dismissal, following a shambolic series of incidents between Tyrone Mings and Ibrahimovic.
Centre-Back: Marcos Rojo (Manchester United)
Who knows what the Argentine was doing so far up the field, but it was a wonderful finish, instinctive of a striker, which handed the former Sporting Lisbon man his first Premier League goal for the Red Devils.
Finally seeming to be aiding his development with regular football at Old Trafford, Rojo is beginning to truly flourish as a centre-half and he has the stats to back it up; his 116 clearances throughout the season make-up the best total of any Manchester United player.
Centre-Back: Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace)
It seems that the Allardyce effect is belated starting to be felt at Selhurst Park, though this latest win was away from South London and was indebted to that typially Allardyce solid defensive performance and taking chances when they came. Sakho, who’d fallen out of favour at Liverpool, was brought in on-loan to help stem the tide, and the French,an proved his worth here, helping the Eagles to a precious clean sheet, meaning that Palace have claimed victory and not conceded a goal in the two games that Sakho has started for them.
His body-on-the-line display for the cause was a joy to watch, and he wasn’t even afraid to go in close to the referee. It is that type of grit and desire to grind out results that will help keep Palace in the Premier League.
Centre-Back: Martin Olsson (Swansea City)
Sweden international Olsson is quickly becoming a favourite at the Liberty Stadium. Gylfi Sigurdsson’s sumptuous back-heel made the goal, but as soon as he was within range, Olsson took the chance with aplomb, firing into the roof of the net to haul his team back into the match.
It is such quality and confidence that has been behind Swansea’s revival under Paul Clement. The man who is more accustomed to being a Number Two raised eyebrows when he brought Olsson in from Norwich, but on this evidence the move has been a match made in heaven. He has now netted twice in his last three games for the Welsh club, as many as he managed in his last 104 appearances in the top-flight.
