Sergio Aguero: Notching a pair of goals against West Ham United, Aguero also won the penalty that the Argentine himself then converted to draw the visitors level for the first time. City’s number 10 also hit the post in their quest not to lose any ground on their rivals at the summit of the Premier League table. Two more of his goal-bound efforts were blocked. In what turned out to be a continuation of The Citizens’ struggles away from The Etihad, Sergio Aguero was once more the man that dug his team out of a hole, often playing from a little deeper and taking on opponents successfully on three occasions. To all intents and purposes, it appears that Aguero is back to his best since a return from injury. It is difficult to disagree with this and if the hitman’s form is maintained, it is surely only a matter of time before Man City are winning regularly away from home and it would take a brave man to bet against them for the Premier League title.

Diego Costa: Although Per Mertesacker did find himself out of position in the build-up to his red card, had Costa not cut across him to bear down on goal, the referee may well have only issued a yellow card. This set the tone for a display which; in my mind, was symptomatic of Costa returning to his form of the first half of last season. Certainly in the first period of the game against Arsenal, he made a refreshing lack of fuss made about incidents that did not completely go his way. Instead, Costa’s focus was directed on damaging his opponents by scoring and creating chances rather than leaving a boot in or thrusting his head in their direction.

Chelsea took the lead through their number 19 and never surrendered it, as Costa took advantage of Gabriel not being completely up to speed with the game to nick in front of him at the near post and fire home. With the forward back to his bullying best, directing all his efforts within the width of the penalty area and as such, Costa was a more concerted threat to Arsenal’s central defenders. Notably leaner than during much of the campaign, Costa’s intention to run in behind meant that; despite Wenger’s side going in search of a goal, they could not push too high up the pitch due to the risk of being exposed in the open space. Won three fouls off Arsenal’s defence to establish a platform for Chelsea to build on.
