Centre-Forward: Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
Everton were simply magnificent against Manchester City. They allowed their opponents to monopolise possession, but when they broke forward, they did so with killer conviction, and Romelu Lukaku epitomised that ruthless instinct going forward, netting the goal that got their demolition of Pep’s men underway whilst giving former Toffee John Stones a torrid time throughout.
You’d have thought a former team-mate would’ve known what the Belgian was all about and known exactly how to combat it, but City were all at sea at Stones left a mere spectator by the big striker who ran rings around him all game. A job well done by Everton but Lukaku, and the side as a whole must churn out these performances consistently if they are serious about a top-six finish.
Centre-Forward: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)
Harry Kane looked like he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders at the start of the season, but now he is truly back to his consistent, and indeed potent best, with his latest hat-trick ensuring he joins the club of strikers with the most for Tottenham. He has a hat-trick of hat-tricks in fact for his boyhood club now, level with Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe.
Their previous two opponents, Chelsea and West Brom, were the teams responsible for putting an end to Spurs’ title challenge last season, and they look to have hit-back in some style with their last two victories after putting both to the sword. Alli took the plaudits against the Blues but against the Baggies the day was Kane’s. Not a bad way to celebrate the birth of his first child, and it may be a good omen. Spurs are up to second, and more and more it’s looking like it might just be their year.
Centre-Forward: Andy Carroll (West Ham United)
The former Newcastle and Liverpool man just seems to love a London Derby. The target-man has netted five in his last three home Premier League games against other London clubs for the Hammers, and his all-round performance was exactly what was required against Crystal Palace, after an ignominious exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester City, topped off with the blow that Dimitri Payet is wanting out of the club.
The world looked to be caving in on the Hammers as they took on another team in the heat of the lower-midtable scrap in the shape of Crystal Palace, and in the cauldron that is London Stadium with the fans so far from the pitch, it may have felt like a lonely world for manager Slaven Bilic and his players. Carroll was the ringleader however, in what became a sterling team performance, as the hosts set about dismantling their rivals from the southern end of the capital, and he capped it off with a stunning overhead kick goal to put his side 2-0 up.
A show of total commitment, in an age where the loyalty of footballers is under serious question.
