Right-Forward: Jermain Defoe (Sunderland)

The partnership between Jermain Defoe and teammate Victor Anichebe is really beginning to blossom for Sunderland, and it was a career milsetone for Defoe as he netted the Black Cats’ opening goal against Hull, as he became the eighth player to score 150 goals in the Premier League. The feat ensures the 34-year-old joins an elite club of Premier League frontmen, including talents such as Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Andy Cole, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen.

Defoe’s goals and importance to the Sunderland cause in their battle against the drop cannot be underestimated, but with a potent partner up with him and a rapidly developing and fruitful partnership up front, David Moyes may finally have discovered the combination which can rescue his team from the relegation mire.

Centre-Forward: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Despite being a passive presence for the majority of the match, the sign of a good striker is that they can come alive from nowhere when their team needs them the most, and when Spurs’ need was dire- trailing 1-2 at home to West Ham- Kane sped to their rescue with an emphatic late-show to pull a much needed win out of the fire for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Kane was on hand in the right place at the right time to prod home from close range following good work down the left by Son Heung-Min, and when the South Korean was scythed down by Havard Nordtveit to gift Spurs a penalty, Kane coolly converted the spot kick to salvage three valuable points for the hosts.

Left-Forward: Victor Anichebe (Sunderland)

With two successive wins for the first time this season, and a potential upward turn for Sunderland, manager David Moyes looks to have found his winning formula, and much of that is owed to the potent and growing partnership between Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe.

Anichebe’s emphatic brace helped the Black Cats accelerate away from Hull in their key clash over the weekend, and his presence in the final third offers Sunderland and Defoe another attacking dimension when the two are deployed together up front. He was simply too hot for Hull to handle, and not even a power outage at the Stadium of Light was going to stem the tide.
