Coach: David Moyes (Sunderland)
Formation: 4-3-3
David Moyes has suffered something of a baptism of fire since taking the reins at Sunderland. In his first job in English football since his short-lived stint at Manchester United, he oversaw the Black Cats’ first league win of the season at Bournemouth before the international break and now seems to have discovered a winning formula after seeing his side dismantle fellow strugglers Hull at the Stadium of Light to earn back-to-back victories for the first time since May. Much of that set-up of course was owed to the effective strike partnership of the evergreen Jermain Defoe and Moyes’ former Everton colleague Victor Anichebe.
It was only Sunderland’s second win of the campaign in total, and their first at home. The result put the rejuvenated Black Cats only three points from safety, and even the disruption of a ten minute power-cut wasn’t enough to quell the momentum of Moyes’ side, who maintained their focus to run out convincing 3-0 winners.
If Moyes was a man under pressure going into this game, given his manner on the touchline, you certainly wouldn’t have thought so. His tactical set-up was perfect and allowed Sunderland to usher the best out of strikers Victor Anichebe and Jermain Defoe, thus the Scotsman is more than worthy of making it as our Manager of the Week.
