Right-Midfield: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur)
Out of all of Spurs’ shining stars against City, Alli was probably one of the best. He was full of running and took his goal with class and composure before capping off his performance by winning Tottenham their penalty, which had Lamela and Son not argued over taking it probably would have seen the hosts three goals to the good.
Centre-Midfield: Victor Wanyama (Tottenham Hotspur)
Jermaine Jenas named the Kenyan midfielder as his Man of the Match after the game was shown on BBC’s Match of the Day 2, and if you re-watch the game and keep an eye on him it becomes obvious as to why. He was influential is snuffing out danger and preventing City from causing trouble, sweeping up in front of his defence using his physical presence to keep the visitors on lock-down.
A massive part of the Spurs shut-out job on Guardiola’s City and although he may not be the most obvious name on the teamsheet, he showed his importance here nonetheless.
Left-Midfield: Dimitri Payet (West Ham United)
After a draining Euro 2016 with France, Dimitri Payet’s season has barely come alive before now, but he re-announced his presence with style, breaking his duck with a stunning solo goal against Middlesbrough.
The France international weaved his way around five Middlesbrough defenders before slotting the ball coolly beyond keeper Victor Valdes. If West Ham are to turn their season around however, they can’t keep relying on moments of inspiration like this, but with another point on the board and a positive performance from their main man, it is a step in the right direction.
