There was nothing rusty about Sergio Aguero’s play on his return from suspension and in all honesty, it looked as if he had never been away. His brilliant turn and finish early on to put City ahead at Swansea bamboozled defender Jordi Amat, and then when faced with a spot kick to restore City’s lead, he showed the sheer audacity to pull off a Panenka style chip but executed it so coolly that keeper Lukasz Fabianski was always going to be wrong-footed.

Guardiola and City have hardly toiled in his absence, but Saturday was a reminder of just how important he is to this team.

The Chilean was making his 100th appearance for Arsenal at the weekend, and he was one of the bright sparks of one of the Gunners’ best performances in recent memory and sent a reminder out to the Premier League of how potent the Gunners can be when the likes of him and Mesut Özil perform at the peak of their powers.

He completed the ugly tasks better last time out against Hull as well as missing a penalty, but this was a stylish performance, and he dispatched Chelsea with almost a swagger featuring once again at the focal point of Arsenal’s attack, and got his goal early on after picking Gary Cahill’s pocket and racing away to delicately chip the ball over Thibaut Courtois. He was too dynamic, too intelligent and linked far too well with his team-mates for an out of sorts Chelsea to have any hope of shackling him, and his goal was his 47th in an Arsenal shirt, one fewer than the great Thierry Henry had scored by the time he had made the same number of club appearances.
