Andros Townsend (Crystal Palace)
Crystal Palace’s 4-1 win over Stoke City inflicted more misery on Mark Hughes’ stuttering side, but Andros Townsend in particular was at the heart of their torment. His excellent individual strike capped off an impressive performance from a player who just missed out on making the cut for Euro 2016, and he proved the bane of the Potters’ afternoon in registering an assist and penning Stoke in with his movement.
Marko Arnautovic’s late challenge on Townsend was punished for Palace’s third of the afternoon, Jason Puncheon’s resulting free-kick ending up at the feet of a grateful James McArthur, whose shot took a deflection off Geoff Cameron to beat veteran goalkeeper Shay Given.
It was Palace’s wide threat however that was the key component in giving the Potters a torrid time in South London, and Townsend was the shining star in the unplayable trio of himself, opposite wing partner Wilfried Zaha, and Jason Puncheon.
Islam Slimani (Leicester City)
Slimani was as clinical as he was brilliant on his Premier League debut for the Foxes, scoring two of his three efforts on goal in their 3-0 win over Burnley, both of them being headers. The Algerian as now shown a glimpse of his goal-scoring touch after starting in Leicester’s 3-0 Champions League win over Club Brugge, despite not finding the back of the net, and his physical presence not only causes an added problem for defences but it gives Jamie Vardy a lot more freedom by relieving the pressure of being the club’s main source of goals.
The former Sporting Lisbon striker and record signing looks as if he will prove a fans’ favourite at the King Power already, and it looks exciting times once again for Leicester if he can continue to replicate this form.
Nacer Chadli (West Bromwich Albion)
Although it became clear towards the end of his White Hart Lane career that a move would be the best option both for Nacer Chadli and Tottenham Hotspur, a switch to the Hawthorns to feature for Tony Pulis’ Baggies looked on paper to be a match made in hell. As it was, Spurs received a decent price for the Belgian winger and West Brom seem to have signed the creative lynch-pin that may just be the solution to all of their attacking problems.
Chadli scored a brace and assisted two more goals against West Ham United in a 4-2 home win – the first time an Albion player has ever been directly involved in four goals in a Premier League match. Chadli’s performance against a quickly fading West Ham side will have delighted the club’s hierarchy, supporters and club manager Tony Pulis alike, the club’s £13 million record signing already looking like coming good, and he was ruthless in exploiting West Ham’s bizarrely shaky back-line to pile further pressure on beleaguered boss Slaven Bilic.
Tottenham supporters were quick to vent their fury over the Belgian’s departure following his move, and on this showing he may be a big miss for Spurs since the depth and quality Chadli provides may be sorely missed in what will be a demanding and long season given the ramifications of negotiating a Champions League campaign alongside their domestic commitments.
