Premier League Team of the Week V feat. Liverpool and Everton stars

The Premier League was back once more this weekend for Matchday V of the 2016/17 campaign, and the new season really seems to be gathering pace after the ten top flight games played out over the weekend yielded a total of 33 goals. The return of Friday Night Football kicked off proceedings, where Chelsea – who had a 100% home record going into the weekend under new boss Antonio Conte – entertained Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. A victor in West London last season, Klopp and his men took the spoils once again in a 2-1 victory, which included a first Liverpool goal for Dejan Lovren and a stunning 25-yard strike from Jordan Henderson to move the Reds into the Top Four.

Their Merseyside rivals Everton enjoyed similar success. The Toffees’ strong start to the season under Ronald Koeman continued with a 3-1 triumph over Middlesbrough which moved them up to second, whilst Manchester City hit four past Bournemouth at the Etihad to remain top of the Premier League with a 100% record under Pep Guardiola.

They weren’t the only team to hit four over the weekend though; Arsenal managed the feat in a 4-1 victory at Hull, as did West Bromwich Albion in a 4-2 win at the Hawthorns over West Ham United, whose defensive woes continued to pile further pressure on boss Slaven Bilic.

The action didn’t end there. A pulsating weekend of Premier League football ran into Super Sunday, where Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton both claimed 1-0 victories; Harry Kane scoring in back-to-back games for the first time this season whilst Saints registered their first win under Claude Puel.

Meanwhile, José Mourinho’s Manchester United suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in 2016/17 following a 3-1 reverse at Vicarage Road against an improving Watford, meaning that the Red Devils are now without a win in three in all competitions.

Bottom club Stoke City also saw their early season troubles continue, Mark Hughes’ Potters shipping four goals for a third time in four matches to crash to a 4-1 defeat at Crystal Palace. They and Sunderland are now the only clubs yet to win so far this season.

In an engaging weekend of football which featured some scintillating attacking displays and on the other hand some exhibitions of dreadful defending, who stood out from the rest to make The Boot Room’s Team of the Week? Find out over the next few pages.
