With all eyes on the Manchester Derby which kicked off proceedings in the Premier League during Saturday lunchtime, the weekend showstopper was undoubtedly up first before the Sky Sports cameras. It was dubbed the long-awaited return of Pep Guardiola’s heated rivalry with old adversary José Mourinho, in an eagerly anticipated first clash between the pair in English football. Spaniard Guardiola’s latest eventual triumph over the Special One sent out a reverberating statement of Manchester City’s title credentials and also set the tone for a fantastic weekend of Premier League football, the Citizens coming out on top in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
City are now the only team in the Premier League to maintain their 100% record after Chelsea dropped points at Swansea, Diego Costa rescuing a point late-on after a controversial Leroy Fer goal had put Swansea ahead. Arsenal registered their second win of the season, scraping a late victory over Southampton courtesy of Santi Cazorla’s penalty, whilst North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur set about sending out a statement of their own with a second consecutive 4-0 drubbing of Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium. It was a miserable weekend for Claudio Ranieri and defending champions Leicester City however, after they were put to the sword by an impressive Liverpool in a 4-1 defeat at Anfield.
One of the picks of the weekend however was at West Ham United, where the Hammers who were two goals to the good and in complete control just after the half hour mark, proceeded to fall to a 4-2 defeat- their first in the league at their new London Stadium headquarters- courtesy of a sensational Watford fightback to hand Walter Mazzarri his first win as manager. That was before Everton rounded off the weekend’s action on Monday night, with a convincing 3-0 win over former manager David Moyes’ Sunderland side. Romelu Lukaku was the man to credit for taking the spoils, plundering an 11 minute hat-trick after the interval to end a run of 1139 minutes without scoring.
