Centre-Forward: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Manchester United)
The Swedish international star grabs headlines and indeed goals wherever he goes, though now at the age of 34, several pundits and supporters alike were sceptical that the mercurial forward would have the legs to lead United’s forward line in the difficult environment of the Premier League.
He has however looked the part in both of his competitive performances for the Red Devils so far, and wrote himself into history with his 25-yard strike at Bournemouth. The natural goalscorer has now scored on his league debut at every club he has played for, and his link-up play and holding up of the ball was equally as exceptional as his eye for goal. Revered as a man of almost comical arrogance, he has got on with the job at hand since arriving at Old Trafford with minimal fuss, and all the indications are there that he will become another cult hero to join the long line of those adored by the red half of Manchester.
Left-Forward: Nathan Redmond (Southampton)
Despite being a winger by trade, Southampton’s new man in the dugout, Frenchman Claude Puel, made a stroke of genius in deploying Redmond as a forward, similarly to how he moulded Hatem Ben Arfa into more of a striker at OGC Nice last season. On the opening day showing, Redmond’s switch from the flank to up front may pay similar dividends after rattling Watford throughout an entertaining 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s.
Cutting in onto his right, Redmond forced a superb save out of Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, before his left-foot finally got the better of the Brazilian with a sweetly caught volley. His movement off the ball in pulling defenders out of position and making runs in behind was exceptional, and Southampton may have struck gold if Redmond can maintain such form throughout the season.
