Right-Midfield (Free Role): David Silva (Manchester City)
The Spanish international midfielder was the lynchpin of Manchester City’s midfield in their 3-1 win over West Ham United at the Etihad on Sunday, dictating the play throughout the contest, controlling the game and creating both goals for for Raheem Sterling.
After a quiet campaign under Manuel Pellegrini last season, Silva looks to be back to his best under compatriot Pep Guardiola and he is behind almost everything that makes Manchester City tick. If the Citizens are to be title contenders this season, Silva’s performances will be key.
Centre-Midfield: Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City)
Former Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and England forward turned pundit Alan Shearer, labelled it nonsensical that Leicester’s midfield maestro didn’t make the final 23-man cut for Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad with England, and the Premier League winning midfielder looked like a man out to prove a point as he pulled all the strings for Leicester City at a rainswept King Power Stadium as they turned the screw against Francesco Guidolin’s Swansea.
The England international and former Manchester United trainee played more passes, had more touches of the ball and covered more ground than any other player in the Saturday afternoon clash, and capped off his performance when, after being involved in some superb one touch play, he played a perfectly weighted through-ball for Jamie Vardy to race onto and slam the ball beyond Lukasz Fabianski via the woodwork to put the champions ahead.
His work rate did not nose dive even as the game descended into chaos in wet and windy conditions, and after a superb campaign in Leicester’s Premier League winning season, he looks a player full of confidence again this term and was instrumental in helping the Foxes get off the mark with their first win of their title defence.
Left-Midfield: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)
After doing minimal to justify his hefty £49million price-tag last season at the Etihad and following up with a miserable string of performances at Euro 2016, Sterling looks like a man keen to prove a point under Guardiola, and the seemingly born-again wide-man makes it into our Team of the Week for the third match-day running.
His brace capped off an impressive overall display from the Kingston-born England international, and he has now clocked up a grand total of three assists this campaign, giving him a hand in five goals for City so far this season. For the past two weeks, we have been saying that the only absence from his game is goals, and now he seems to be providing that. He was involved in just four goals in his final 17 appearances for City under Manuel Pellegrini, which emphasises to what extent the midfielder has improved under Catalan coach Guardiola.
If he can replicate the form he is showing at present, he may just prove decisive for City’s cause in the destiny of the Premier League title this season.
