Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has been named by Southampton’s Michael Obafemi in his three-man list of the toughest defenders he’s faced so far, in conversation with Rising Ballers.
Spurs have met Southampton four times in all competitions this season, with Sanchez going up against Obafemi in the FA Cup fourth round draw at St Mary’s, and the Saints man ended up coming off in the 74th minute.
In an Instagram Live interview with Rising Ballers, Obafemi was asked about the toughest defender he’s come up against, and he replied: “Fikayo Tomori, Davinson Sanchez and van Dijk.”
Sanchez has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham this season, including 21 Premier League starts and five Champions League starts.
Since his reported £42million move to Spurs from Ajax in 2017, the Colombia international has made 110 competitive appearances in all competitions.
It’s great to hear Obafemi praise Sanchez so highly, and perhaps a bit surprising too, given the Colombian hasn’t exactly had his best season to date.
Although great on his day, Sanchez has come under criticism on occasion for shaky, error-prone displays, and to date hasn’t managed to fully nail down a first-team place.
Can the 23-year-old go on to fulfil his potential with Jose Mourinho now at the helm? Hopefully he will.
