Premier League midfielder says it would be 'special' to play for Rangers
Kenny McLean has told The Athletic that it would be “special” to play for Rangers at some point in his career. The Scottish star is gearing up for a season in the Premier League after starring in Norwich’s immediate return after relegation. Of course, he is widely known as being a Rangers fan.
McLean, 29, had a hand in eight goals from the middle of the park as Norwich earned an instant return to the top tier. He played 37 of Norwich’s 38 Premier League games when they were relegated in 2019-20, and remains a crucial cog at Norwich. But his long-term future could be a doubt.
The ex-Aberdeen ace, who scored 25 goals in 158 games for the Dons, is out of contract in the summer of 2023. That is a while away, but if he does not sign a new deal before next summer – clubs could capitalise. Scotland star McLean speaks of how it would be a dream to play for Rangers.
“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t something I’d want to do,” McLean tells the Athletic, when asked about playing for Rangers. “As a kid that’s what you want to do, play for your boyhood team. Right now I’m about to play in the Premier League again, so I’m not thinking about it.
“But for me and my family, it would be pretty special. I grew up a Rangers fan, used to go to the games with my dad and as a kid in Glasgow, you support Rangers or Celtic and you want to play for one of them,” Norwich and Scotland star McLean continued. “I was on the better side.”
Where could Rangers fit Norwich star McLean in?
The style that Steven Gerrard has imposed at Rangers would certainly suit McLean. Getting on the ball, always looking forward but also hard-working and rigid out of possession. The Gers, though, have just signed John Lundstram on a free and have numerous other options in midfield.
Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield as well as Lundstram are options. However, West Ham have begun talks for Finland ace Kamara – who might want to return to London. So, if Kamara goes, could McLean be a target? A possibility.
