Pre-season form suggests Wolves won’t miss out on Oleksandr Zinchenko

It appears Wolverhampton Wanderers may have given up the ghost in the pursuit of Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City. Wolves had agreed a £16 million fee with City for the Ukrainian. The winger turned left-back would have been the perfect recruit for Nuno’s wing-back formation.

However, as reported by the Daily Mail a deal is not progressing. Wolves have allowed Barry Douglas to head to Leeds United, seemingly freeing up space for Zinchenko. But Jonny Castro’s arrival from Atletico Madrid swiftly closed that door.

And, in fairness, based on pre-season, Wolves might be best off saving their money.

Zinchenko has struggled for City this summer. During City’s loss to Borussia Dortmund earlier this week the Ukrainian was roasted by USA sensation Christian Pulisic. Eventually, he gave away a penalty.

Whilst his performance against Liverpool early this morning was better, it came in the centre of midfield. With the arrival of Joao Moutinho, it is unlikely Wolves see Zinchenko in that position.

Right now it does not look like this deal is going anywhere and, in reality, Wolves are probably better off without him.
