Potential Tottenham boost as Fabrizio Romano says Atalanta 'set' to make £9.5m signing
Tottenham may have a potential boost in their pursuit of Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, as the Italian club are reportedly about to make a new signing for their backline.
Well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano reports on Twitter that Atalanta are “set” to sign centre-back Matteo Lovato from Serie A rivals Verona. The 21-year-old will move during this window after a €11million (£9.5million) deal was agreed.
Romano says that Spurs remain in conversation with Atalanta about their current centre-half Romero, who’s been heavily linked with a move to north London recently. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are now pushing again to sign the 23-year-old in the wake of the latest update.
Romano, who’s been covering the Romero news story, has already claimed Spurs have agreed personal terms for the Atalanta man. But, they now need to wrap up a deal with the Italian club.
The Guardian say that they could want as much a £47million for his signature.
Potential boost for Tottenham in Cristian Romero pursuit
With Atalanta about to spend nearly £10million on a new defender, surely that’s good news for Spurs. Perhaps they are bracing themselves for the departure of Romero, with speculation intensifying.
He’s a highly rated Argentine that would be a great addition, if they can get a deal over the line.
Toby Alderweireld has already left this summer, leaving a considerable gap in the Spurs defence. It feels like they need a marquee defensive signing to move forward because they need a revamp.
