'Potential to be one of the best': Rival PL boss makes big claim about 25-year-old Spurs player
Thomas Frank has shared with The Telegraph how he told Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg that he could be a world-class midfielder when he was coming through Denmark’s youth ranks, and insisted that the Spurs star can be one of the Premier League’s best in his position.
Hojbjerg, of course, is gearing up for the Euro 2020 semi-final with England at Wembley.
The Tottenham man has been superb throughout the tournament, taking his club form with him after linking up with Kasper Hjulmand’s side.
Ahead of the game, Frank – who is set to become only the second Dane to manage in the Premier League later this year – insisted that Hojbjerg has everything he could need to become one of the world’s best.
“I coached Hojbjerg for three years in the Danish youth teams. I said to him, when he was in the under-17 national team, that he could be a world-class holding midfielder” he told The Telegraph.
“On the ball his technical ability is extremely strong: he has a great first touch and a wide passing range. He is a very good passer, and he protects the ball well. He also has physicality and pace. He has the potential to be one of the best sitting midfielders in the Premier League.”
Hojbjerg has looked like one of the Premier League’s best in a difficult season with Spurs
Hojbjerg proved to be an outstanding signing for Spurs. The 25-year-old only cost the club £15 million.
And yet, he quickly established himself as a stalwart. He was certainly one of the Premier League’s best in the middle of the park last season.
No player won more tackles than Hojbjerg. Meanwhile, no player applied pressure more often than the Dane. And no player helped their team win possession back with that pressure more often than the Spurs star.
He actually does not rank that high in any of those areas at Euro 2020. But only 15 players at the tournament have completed more passes than him.
And remarkably, only one player has more assists than him.
