Potential Leeds blow as report claims Real Madrid want Rodrigo De Paul

Leeds United may have to clear some significant hurdles if they have any interest in signing Rodrigo De Paul this summer, with Spanish outlet Defensa Central reporting that Real Madrid are now keen on the midfielder.

De Paul was seemingly first linked with a move to Elland Road last August. The Telegraph claimed that Marcelo Bielsa was keen to add the 26-year-old to his ranks following their promotion.

It was noted at the time that he was their first choice target in the middle of the park. Of course however, no move would take place.

But the links did not go away. As recently as January, The Sun was reporting that Leeds had continued to track De Paul.

That report suggested that Bielsa was unsure about whether to make a January move or hold off on a bid until the summer.

It remains to be seen if they show any interest when the campaign concludes. But if they do ask about the Udinese star, they may find themselves in a battle with Real Madrid for his signature.

According to Defensa Central, De Paul’s form has left him on Los Blancos’s radar. It is suggested that he would be a low-cost option, with the report claiming that he could cost just £25.9 million (€30 million).

TBR View: Leeds must consider De Paul move this summer – even if they are underdogs

Leeds’s recent defeat at West Ham arguably highlighted the need for the Whites to strengthen their midfield ranks in the summer.

Stuart Dallas has been outstanding this season. But it may not be the best sign if the Northern Irishman is the best-performing option in the role in front of Kalvin Phillips.

Some fans seem to be resigned to the fact that Leeds are never going to sign De Paul. And of course, Madrid reportedly joining the race will not help their chances if Bielsa does want him this summer.

But Leeds should still ask the question. They can offer the Argentinian the chance to be a focal point of the side. And if game-time is his priority, perhaps the potential underdogs could spring a surprise.
