This summer it appeared Sunderland were set to let Bryan Oviedo go. Following relegation to League One the Costa Rica international was open to an exit. Sunderland, on the other hand, were also keen to sell as his wages and valuation made him a good commodity to cash in on.
Unfortunately, Sunderland could not find a club ready to pay for his services and the World Cup performer stuck around.
Unlike other players Sunderland wanted to shift this summer, Oviedo did not throw a sulk. Instead, he has pulled his socks up and performed well for Sunderland so far this season.
However, he was recently dropped for young talent Denver Hume after a ropey performance against Burton Albion.

Oviedo was unprotected down his flank and struggled defensively.
So it begs the question? Should Oviedo be used as a left-winger?
It would allow Hume to get regular playing time and with a defensive minded player in front of him, would give Sunderland maximum stability down that flank.
Going forward, there is no doubting Oviedo’s ability. Capable on either foot he has an exquisite cross and a decent shot as well.
Combining Hume and Oviedo, instead of separating them, could be key to a lethal Sunderland left-hand side this season.
