Glasgow Rangers are currently on the lookout for a new manager following Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox exit earlier this week.

According to Sky Sports, Rangers will hold talks with candidates this weekend, director Ross Wilson heading the search.

And it looks as though there is “comfortably” one frontrunner for the Gers role, according to Sky reporter Gordon Duncan.

The frontrunner is believed to be Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who played for Rangers between 1998 and 2001.

He won five trophies while playing for the famous club, including two league titles.

The 46-year-old also played for Barcelona, Arsenal and Feyenoord, as well as winning over 100 caps for the Netherlands.

Van Bronckhorst has also managed Feyenoord, leading them to the Eredivisie title in 2017 – their first in 18 years.

He also won two KNVB Cups and two Johan Cruyff Shields while in charge of the Rotterdam club.

Van Bronckhorst went on to join Chinese Super League club Guangzhou City, where, after finishing 11th, he quit to return to his family.

Duncan believes the Dutchman would be a popular choice amongst Bears due to his Rangers links and impressive CV.

“Van Bronckhorst is comfortably the frontrunner and the vast majority of Rangers fans are behind his appointment,” said Duncan.

“He was a very popular player here in the late 90s and early 2000s and he went on to have a very good career with the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona.

“And crucially he has had managerial success as well, winning the title in the Netherlands with Feyenoord.

“So he would clearly be a popular choice and he does seem to be the frontrunner and time will tell if he is the man to take over from Gerrard.”
