Speaking prior to Leeds United’s clash with Brentford last night, former Elland Road hero Pontus Jansson admitted that the West Yorkshire club will always have a special place in his heart.
In conversation with Sky Sports, he made it clear that he loved his time at Leeds United but is now focused on challenging the Whites for promotion at his new club.
“To say it is not a special game is a lie…I will respect Leeds until the end of my life.
“We probably deserve more points than we have got but we’ve played against three good teams. The win against Middlesbrough was a good one, a good message to the league that we are better than last year.”
Brentford lost last night’s clash with Jansson’s former team but the Swedish international showed that he is still a top defender at this level with an assured performance for the Bees.
Unfortunately, team-mate Julian Jeanvier lost track of Eddie Nketiah on one occasion and Leeds’ loanee punished the visiting side.
As for his words about Leeds United, it is unlikely many a Leeds fan will consider them disingenuous.
There was something of a cloud hanging over his out-of-the-blue transfer to a Championship rival such as Brentford and Leeds fans will have loved to hear their former hero talk so warmly about the club.
However, when it comes to challenging the early pace-setters for promotion, Leeds fans will believe they have the upper-hand on their former player.
