Leeds United’s current team is not packed full of international players but there are exceptions. Ezgjan Alioski is a Macedonia regular, Pablo Hernandez’s days with the Spanish national team are behind him whilst Pontus Jansson featured at the World Cup for Sweden this summer.

Another player who has international experience is Mateusz Klich. The 28-year-old made his debut for his nation back in 2011 whilst at first club Cracovia.

He subsequently went on to play 10 times for Poland. He even scored, netting in a 3-2 friendly win against Denmark in August 2013.

However, his last call-up came in 2015 and last season, after being cast aside by Leeds not long after arriving from FC Twente, he would have been forgiven for thinking he might never play for Poland again.

But he has been resurgent this season. Whatever Thomas Christiansen did not see in the midfielder, Marcelo Bielsa does.

Klich has two goals and one assist in five games so far this season and has become an integral cog in Bielsa’s Leeds machine.

With that in mind, Klich is back in the Poland set-up.

Manager Jerzy Brzeczek has called the Leeds United star into his squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League clash with Italy and friendly v the Republic of Ireland.

After Poland’s poor showing at the World Cup in Russia, Klich is now part of a renewed optimism that the nation can get back in track with the Italians.

Klich has proven that getting back on track might be his niche after his excellence with Leeds this term. The call-up, is fully deserved.
