Pochettino’s track record with young players gives Tottenham edge in Clarke race

Tottenham and Arsenal are set for a January transfer tussle over Leeds United starlet Jack Clarke this month, according to Football Insider.

They report that Spurs are keen on signing the 18-year-old winger to boost their dwindling attacking options, while Arsenal are preparing a formal offer for his services.

There is reportedly uncertainty over Clarke’s contract situation at Elland Road, as Leeds will not enter discussions over a new deal until the end of the season.

But Clarke’s recent form has made him a key part of Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion-chasing side and understandably caught the eye on both sides of north London.

And if it comes down to a choice between the two bitter rivals, it may be Mauricio Pochettino’s proven record of developing young English talent and putting them into the first team that tips the balance Tottenham’s way.

Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Harry Winks are just four examples and Pochettino also blooded the likes of Luke Shaw during his Southampton days.

Meanwhile, Unai Emery may well continue Arsene Wenger’s tradition of putting immense faith in young players, but the Emirates Stadium turned into a place where the development of promising talent stalled in the closing stages of the Frenchman’s reign.
