Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti in the coming months – and Mauricio Pochettino is an enormous fan, making a prediction in 2016 that could now come true.
Sky Sports have claimed that 26-year-old defender Umtiti could be on his way to Tottenham after Barcelona offered the France international, and Nelson Semedo to Spurs, in return for ex-Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
It is believed Barcelona are looking to avoid spending big this summer due to the global health crisis, and that means they have looked at other avenues in order to land their targets. They are willing to wave goodbye to Semedo and Umtiti, for Ndombele.
Spurs will need a central defender as Jan Vertonghen looks more and more likely to leave the north London club in the coming months, and Pochettino once explained how highly he rates World Cup winner Umtiti – predicting he would move to England.
“He is one of the interesting players with potential. He could come to the Premier League. He is one of the players that our recruitment unit follows. We have reports on several French players,” Pochettino told RMC Sport in 2016.
TBR’s view – Spurs must listen to Pochettino’s claim
Spurs fans are fiercely defensive of club-record signing Ndombele. But in terms of business, it would be ridiculous for Spurs to ignore an offer of both Semedo and Umtiti for the French powerhouse Ndombele.
Yes, Ndombele will improve. But Spurs need to replace Vertonghen and Aurier, and like Barcelona, they will not want to spend money. Solving two defensive problems at the cost of Ndombele is a deal Spurs cannot overlook.
