Tottenham Hotspur suffered defeat at the hands of Manchester City yesterday on a pitch that looked more Sunday league than Premier League. However, that did not excuse Tottenham for the way in which they conceded the opening and the only, goal of the game.
Kieran Trippier decided to half-head the ball back toward a non-present Hugo Lloris instead of simply clearing his lines. Raheem Sterling then outpaced the England defender, before dribbling past him with ease in the box. The cut-back was perfect and Riyad Mahrez put the ball away for an emotional winner.
For many Tottenham fans on Twitter, this was the last straw from their right-back.
Trippier has not been living up to his previous good form so far this season. The England international has simply not been up to scratch and fans have been saying so for some time.
This summer, he was one of the heroes for England in their run to the semi-final of the World Cup, but his displays this season have not been near that level.
His defensive frailty showed again against the pace of Sterling and Tottenham fans feel a better option is needed in the role if they are to truly challenge the likes of City this season.
Trippier was not the only out-of-sorts Spurs player on show yesterday. However, considering his seniority among the team, fans expect more from the right-back.
This was simply not good enough…
Poor from Trippier

I’ve fallen out of love with trippier. The flaws in the man’s game are ridiculous. He will NEVER try to get past his man. Keeps trying the same cut backs and balls down the channel which are so predictable. And is on toast against any attacker who has pace (1/n) #THFC

Trippier was very poor tonight and totally to blame for the City goal! Living off that World Cup Semi Final free kick a tad! Aurier is a bit of a liability at times but he deserves a go given Trippiers recent form! #THFC
