Virgil van Dijk is the PFA Player of the Year after an outstanding campaign at the back for title-chasing Liverpool. The Dutchman has been in fine form for Celtic and fully deserves the award.
Speaking after winning the award the colossus paid tribute to his former clubs FC Groningen and Southampton. He nearly forgot, but he also paid homage to Celtic. The Bhoys took a gamble on the defender back in 2013 when snapping him up from Groningen and it was at Parkhead that he truly started to hone his craft.
By the time he left the club, he was easily at the level necessary to play in the English Premier League.

Despite that, big teams would not gamble on the defender and Southampton eventually made the move for the player, a transfer that proved very worthwhile financially in the long run.
Celtic fans rightly applauded VVD’s win and were also quick to highlight the role they played in his development.
Rightly so as well. Celtic played a pivotal role in the progression of the best defender in the Premier League and perhaps do not receive the credit they deserve for his achievements.
