It would be fair to say that not many Everton fans were disappointed to see Ashley Williams leave the club this summer. The Welshman’s best days are long behind him and he was struggling to keep up with the pace of the Premier League.
A downgrade in ability Everton fans can forgive. It comes with age. Phil Jagielka is not the same player he was five years ago. However, he still always put in his all and did his best for the club.
Everton fans felt that was not the case with Williams. It was no coincidence that he was dropped from the Everton squad after his final game with the club. He was sent off v Burnley that day. The Welshman had lost his head as his side were being punished. As far as a lot of Everton fans were concerned, it appeared he wanted to get sent off.
Williams had previous. During a Europa League tie with Lyon earlier in the season he did similar, with Everton fans furious at his unprofessional behaviour.

This summer, Stoke decided to take him on loan in their bid for Championship promotion. Based on tonight, they are probably regretting that decision.
Williams was awful as Stoke lost 3-0, at home, to Wigan Athletic. Nick Powell tore him apart from start to finish and got right inside the head of the Everton loanee.
Everton fans were certainly not surprised to see that, with his team trailing 3-0 and the chips down, Williams got himself sent off for two bookable offences.
Stoke fans were incensed. Everton fans just had the familiar feeling that Williams gave them throughout last season.
