‘Playing like an all-time great’: Chris Sutton delivers verdict on West Ham star

Chris Sutton has delivered a glowing verdict on West Ham and England star Declan Rice for his performances at Euro 2020 this summer.

The Hammers midfielder was an ever-present for England at the Euros, but unfortunately his country fell just short of the top prize.

England were beaten on penalties by Italy in the final of Euro 2020 on Sunday, so it was yet more heartache for the Three Lions.

Despite the final defeat, pundit Sutton has reflected on a great tournament from Rice. In particular, he loved his weekend display in the final against Italy.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder was pivotal in Gareth Southgate’s XI.

First of all, he played in all seven tournament matches. In addition, the midfield combination he formed alongside Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips was the platform for a lot of their success.

“He did himself proud, his family proud and his club proud. Rice was playing like an all-time great in the first half of Sunday’s final, up against that talented Italian trio of Marco Verratti, Jorginho and Nicolo Barella. West Ham’s midfielder was winning the ball and driving forward with it. At only 22 years old, he enjoyed an excellent tournament,” Sutton told the Daily Mail.

Declan Rice has enhanced reputation at Euro 2020

Overall, this summer has been another big step forward for Rice.

There are times his decision making can be a little sharper, but the maturity he plays with for a 22-year-old is unbelievable.

He did impress in the final against Italy, so has to finish the tournament with his head held high.

There is no reason he won’t be an England starter for the next decade. He has so much potential to keep improving and he already does a great job protecting the back four.
