Tottenham Hotspur reportedly made an offer to sign Ajax star Edson Alvarez in the January transfer window but were blocked by the Dutch club – and now the player has confirmed his dream move is to join Manchester City.
Dutch outlet De Telegraaf claimed last month that Tottenham had enquired over signing the Mexico international, who had only joined Ajax last summer from Club America. Spurs were not the only interested side in January, with LA Galaxy also keen.
Alvarez, 22, is likely be somewhat disillusioned at Ajax. The Mexican ace has started just two of Ajax’s last 13 Eredivisie matches and a summer move could be on the cards, given his lack of action during his first season under Erik Ten Haag.
However, it is clear that Alvarez would rather join a different Premier League side. The £13million Ajax signing (De Telegraaf) told Ajax’s official Twitter account during a Q&A session that he dreams of a move to Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I would really like to play for Manchester City one day,” Alvarez said. “I have been following that club since childhood and I think it is a really nice club, I am a fan. So if I had to choose I would like to play for City.”

TBR’s view – Should Spurs look to bring Alvarez to the Premier League?
Certainly at City, Alvarez is far beneath the standard that Guardiola wants from his City players. The likes of Nicolas Otamendi, Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Fernandinho are much above the standard Alvarez can provide.
But at Tottenham, Alvarez may prove a decent option as cover. Jan Vertonghen is leaving, while Eric Dier is being linked with a move to West Ham. Jose Mourinho needs cover for Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.
Spurs could do worse than signing Alvarez, but they could also do a lot better.
