Unai Emery’s time at Arsenal isn’t fondly remembered in and around the Emirates, but the Spaniard did target a few brilliant players. Christopher Nkunku was one of them at the start of 2019.

The Gunners were on the market looking for a versatile midfielder who could also play on the flanks. Nkunku was heavily linked with a reunion with Emery at Arsenal, but the Gunners couldn’t afford him then.

Arsenal were only looking for a loan deal, but PSG were adamant that they would only sell him. The Gunners decided against a deal then and Emery went on to sign another one of his former players, Denis Suarez, on loan. (BBC)

That move proved to be a disastrous one for all parties and Suarez was sent back to Spain in the summer. Arsenal were linked with Nkunku again, but the Gunners didn’t act on it. RB Leipzig went in with a £13 million bid and secured his signature without much trouble. (Goal)

Fast forward two years, he is one of the best players in the Bundesliga and could soon end up at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Arsenal once snubbed Nkunku, he could join Real Madrid now

According to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea are all interested in signing Nkunku from RB Leipzig next summer.

A deal for the 24-year-old is being negotiated by super-agent Pini Zahavi. The Israeli representative is on brilliant terms with Real Madrid after sealing a deal for David Alaba a few months ago. He believes that the Galacticos are very interested in Nkunku.

As for the two Premier League giants, it is no surprise that they’re keen. Pep Guardiola saw him score a hat-trick against his Manchester City side not too long ago, while Thomas Tuchel knows him well too having worked with him at Paris Saint-Germain.

Nkunku has nine goals and three assists to his name in just 10 starts this term. Those numbers are almost identical to that of Mo Salah, who is being described by many as the best player in the world right now.

Arsene Wenger has shared a long list of players he has missed out on over the years. Nkunku, in comparison to some of the names Arsenal have missed out on in the past, is a small name, but he’s no undoubtedly a very costly miss, especially considering that Arsenal could’ve signed him for under £13 million.
