Arsenal legend Robert Pires has compared Mesut Ozil to former Gunners hero Dennis Bergkamp, according to JOE.
Pires knows Bergkamp well, with the pair having played in the same Invincibles team together and has compared Ozil, who has had a markedly less successful Arsenal career and is currently on the fringes of the Arsenal side.
He said: “The most important thing is to see Mesut in the line-up. He’s very clever, he can make good assists and sometimes he can score.
“For me, he’s like Dennis Bergkamp, he’s a magician, a maestro. Of course, he’s not a warrior, like Dennis… or like me. But in the team, you need everything. And when you have Mesut, he’s important.”
Ozil was supposed to a playmaker on Bergkamp’s level when he came to the Emirates Stadium in 2013, but while he has won the World Cup in that time – something the Dutchman never achieved – he hasn’t reached the same level for the Gunners.
Perhaps some of that comes down to the lack of ‘warrior’ spirit Pires refers to, or the fact that he hasn’t played in a team of the same quality Bergkamp did – but they do both have quality.
But Ozil thrives in space on the counter attack and has developed a reputation for shirking the big games, while Bergkamp was a key part of a winning team; season in and season out.
