Arsenal have completed the signing of Piero Hincapie as Mikel Arteta adds another defensive option to his squad at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have enjoyed a strong transfer window, with Mikel Arteta putting the finishing touches to his first window under Andrea Berta.

Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres all joined Arsenal earlier in the window, and we actually saw a handful of exits on deadline day.

Jakub Kiwior joined Porto, Oleksandr Zinchenko headed on loan to Nottingham Forest, and Reiss Nelson signed for Brentford.

Arsenal did manage to bring in one new face, as Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie completed his move to the Emirates Stadium.

Piero Hincapie on his best position at Arsenal

Kiwior’s exit meant Arsenal wanted to bring in another left-footed defender.

Hincapie quickly became Arsenal’s top target, and the Ecuadorian wanted to secure a move to North London.

The 23-year-old has now joined Arsenal on loan for the season, with a £45million permanent move in the pipeline for 2026.

Berta is earning praise for signing Hincapie, and the defender will be looking to make a big impact in an Arsenal shirt.

Hincapie has now spoken on Arsenal’s official website, and responded when asked to name his preferred position.

The defender often played on the left of a back three at Bayer Leverkusen, but has also played as a left-back and even left wing-back in his career.

Hincapie admitted that he wants to play as a central defender, even if he is comfortable playing at left-back.

Hincapie also highlighted his speed and ball-carrying ability, while branding himself as a leader.

“My best position is centre-back,” said Hincapie.

“I’ve played many games at full-back as well, but I think I’m best at centre-back. As for my qualities, I’m pacey and I like carrying the ball forward as well as being a leader on the pitch,” he added.

Piero Hincapie faces a battle for first-team action at Arsenal

Signing Hincapie to replace Kiwior certainly makes sense, handing Arteta another left-footed defender who can be used in a couple of different roles.

The problem for Hincapie is that he is going from regular first-team action at Bayer Leverkusen to fighting for action at Arsenal.

Rio Ferdinand has hailed Gabriel Magalhaes, and the Brazilian looks almost untouchable as the left-sided centre-back in Arsenal’s back line.

Hincapie also faces stern competition at left-back, with Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly already competing in that position.

Arsenal are competing on multiple fronts, and Hincapie should play his part over the course of a long season, but forcing his way into Arsenal’s best XI in the Premier League won’t be easy.
