Picking Liverpool’s greatest ever Premier League XI

Picking Liverpool’s greatest Premier League XI means sifting through a heap load of top talent and leaving out some of the biggest names ever to grace Anfield and the English top flight.

One thing that is currently missing from any Liverpool Premier League side is the trophy itself.

However, it seems that all could change in the 2018/19 season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to be on the edge of greatness but would any of his new signings make Liverpool’s greatest ever Premier League XI?

Here at The Boot Room, we have carefully selected the very best players over the Premier League era to have played for the Reds and picked their greatest XI.

GK: Pepe Reina

Liverpool’s goalkeeping position has been a thorn in the clubs side ever since this man left the club in 2015, a problem which they may have just solved this summer after signing AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson for £67 million.

However, Reina gets the place in this side as the Brazilian has yet to even play for the Reds. Reina, himself, was an all-rounder, confident with the ball at his feet, a shot-stopper, and penalty saving ace.

A charming character on and off the pitch, and a player who will be remembered fondly by Liverpool fans for years to come.

DF: John Arne Riise

Riise will be remembered by the Anfield faithful for his energetic style of play and relentless shooting technique. The Norweigan international didn’t have much competition for the left back position in this side, in fact, Liverpool hasn’t had that many great left backs during the Premier League era.

Nevertheless, Riise was a great servant to the club and has a Champions League winners medal which makes him part of the clubs history forever.

DF: Sami Hyppia

Sami Hyppia is one of the all-time bargains of the Premier League era, and Liverpool acquired his signature for only £2.5 million.

Hyppia was the focal point of Liverpool’s defence for years and saw himself win trophies under both Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez during his time at the Merseyside club.

They don’t make defenders like this guy anymore, and Hyppia would be a shoe-in for any Liverpool XI, not just their greatest Premier League one.

DF: Jamie Carragher

A one-club man is a rarity in today’s game, but local Liverpool lad Jamie Carragher was just that, and he put everything on the line week in, week out for the Reds.

Carragher didn’t possess the talent that Hyppia had, but he would work just as hard if not harder to compete against the Premier League’s best for years on end.

Liverpool’s greatest Premier League XI just wouldn’t be right without Carragher at the heart of the defence, and for that, he gets the nod to start in this team.

MF: Steven Gerrard

Mr Liverpool himself, of course, this wouldn’t be a Liverpool’s greatest Premier League XI without this guy dictating the midfield, and what a talent he was.

Gerrard saved the average Liverpool sides he played in on countless occasions and it’s highly likely the club wouldn’t have won the silverware they did in recent years if it wasn’t for him.

A Liverpool and England legend, Gerrard will go down as one of the all-time greats to ever play the game.

MF: Xabi Alonso

A cult hero to this day, Xabi Alonso was one of Rafael Benitez’ first signings for the club back in 2004, and he certainly hit the ground running at the Anfield.

His vision, passing ability and all round coolness will be remembered fondly by Liverpool fans, and his Champions League heroics make him a fan favourite even to this day.

MF: Philippe Coutinho

We know, this one still hurts a little. However, it was hard to leave the little Brazilian magician out of this side, and he is one of the best players during the Premier League era to kick a ball at Anfield.

Ultimately, Coutinho will be remembered for his £146 million move to Barcelona, and whether you love him or hate him, his talent is undeniable, and he deserves a place in this XI.

MF: Steve McManaman

Another local Liverpool lad who makes the cut, but McManaman played with an elegance and flair not often seen from English players.

He could seemingly dribble past any player with absolute ease, and the four years he spent at Spanish giants Real Madrid after Liverpool is a testament to how good he was.

ST: Luis Suarez

Suarez was genuinely magical during his time on Merseyside and picked up a PFA Player of the year award in the 2013-14 Premier League season for his incredible efforts.

The Uruguayan striker was a menace to Premier League defences throughout his time on Merseyside and will go down as one of the greatest strikers ever to play in the league and for the Reds.

ST: Robbie Fowler

128 league goals in 266 appearances are why we want Robbie Fowler in our greatest Liverpool Premier League XI.

One of the deadliest poachers the Premier League has ever seen, the Toxteth terror certainly knew where the back of the net was and could score with either foot for fun.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the absolute best from Fowler as his career was plagued with injuries. However, when he was fighting fit, he would be the first name on the teamsheet.

ST: Mohamed Salah

Yes, that’s right, after one season at the Reds we’ve placed the Egyptian king himself in our greatest Liverpool Premier League XI and deservedly so.

Salah broke countless Premier League records last season, including the most ever goals scored in a season (32) as well as picking up the PFA Player of the Year award for his terrific outing.

Salah has become a Liverpool legend already, and will in no doubt continue his excellent exploits for seasons to come.
