Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has always been fond of giving young players a chance in the Reds senior setup.

Over the past few years, the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Neco Williams and Rhys Williams have had opportunities in the Liverpool team.

In addition, Klopp often calls Liverpool academy players up to first-team training to give them a chance of being in the senior fold.

This week, Reds gem Melkamu Frauendorf was pictured at Kirkby alongside Liverpool’s first-team stars.

Frauendorf is a 17-year-old midfielder who joined Liverpool in August 2020 from German side Hoffenheim.

He subsequently signed his first professional deal at Anfield in July 2021.

To date, Frauendorf has made 34 appearances for Liverpool at age level, registering an impressive 11 goals and five assists.

This season, the teenager has four goals and three assists from 11 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League and Under-19 UEFA Youth League.

Described by the Liverpool website as “an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal”, Frauendorf has already featured for Germany at Under-18 level.

Danny Galm, who was Frauendorf’s coach for two years at Hoffenheim, recently spoke highly of the youngster to Blood Red, as transcribed by the Liverpool Echo.

“Mel is a very flexible player,” he said.

“He is straightforward with a good technique and very, very good endurance.

“He didn’t score the most goals, but he was involved in almost all offensive actions.

“For me, he was a very important player, who often initiated decisive moments with his dynamic and straight dribbling.

“I’m not a fan of comparing players to others but Mel is a special player.

“He is fast and has good endurance, and he wants to learn, but remains creative.

“He will develop physically in the next months and will grow [in responsibility] in Liverpool.

“I will follow his development and I hope he will soon experience the spirit of Anfield.”
