Reported Arsenal target Edson Alvarez was left absolutely heartbroken at the World yesterday after Mexico were knocked out of the tournament.
The Gunners were linked with a move for Alvarez over the summer, with 90 Min claiming that Ajax insisted he was not for sale.
Of course, Mikel Arteta’s men were in the market for midfield reinforcements over the summer and the 25-year-old was on their list of potential targets.
Arsenal failed with a deadline day swoop for Douglas Luiz and of course, Alvarez remained in Amsterdam.
It remains unclear whether the Gunners will reignite their interest in the Ajax midfielder in January after they failed to secure a midfielder over the summer.
But Alvarez was pictured heartbroken after Mexico exited the World Cup in Qatar yesterday, despite beating Saudi Arabia 2-1.

Alvarez left heartbroken at World Cup
Mexico were in an astonishing position while they were 2-0 up against Saudi Arabia yesterday. They were set to exit the tournament due to receiving more yellow cards than Poland.
Poland were 2-0 down to Argentina at the time and a goal for Mexico or La Albiceleste would’ve sent Alvarez and his side through.
But of course, Saudi Arabia grabbed a late consolation goal and completely ended Mexico’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages. And Alvarez was clearly devastated after the game and looked heartbroken while talking to a reporter.

Mexico were very unlucky to exit the tournament after Poland were largely underwhelming during their three fixtures.
The Eagles were lucky to have not conceded more than two against Argentina while Mexico had plenty of chances to score more against Saudi Arabia.
Alvarez impressed from midfield during the tournament and built on a solid start to the season with Ajax.
The Mexican midfielder could be a decent option for Arteta if Arsenal were to firm up their interest in January. He would certainly provide brilliant cover for Thomas Partey in the holding midfield role.
