Liverpool legend Phil Thompson expects English pair James Milner and Jordan Henderson to be his old club’s most important players during Sunday’s trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.
He told the Daily Mail: “What matters most is that the players understand this is the biggest game in world football and they dare not lose. Some of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s players will produce their best performance of the season.
“That’s why Jordan Henderson and James Milner will be the most important players in Liverpool’s dressing room. Not Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane or Virgil van Dijk because Henderson and Milner will underline what this game means.”
TBR’s View – This Liverpool side knows what this game means, not just Henderson and Milner
Thompson’s view is rooted in the old-school view that only British players truly understand the importance of the derby matches – and it’s wrong.
This Liverpool squad are European champions and you don’t reach that pinnacle without having an appreciation of the big matches and an unswerving commitment no matter who the opponents are.
United should raise their game but even then, they aren’t capable of playing at the tempo Liverpool can. Everyone in the dressing room will know how important this match is, to both sides.
